The Process

Understanding the environment within which the tax authorities operate, the legal obstacles, the 'blockers', the security concerns, an understanding of the whole landscape for these authorities was key foundation work for this project. Meetings and interviews with tax officers across various jurisdictions allowed me to create a set of requirements and a focus on the desired outcomes for users.

The existing processes within most organisations relied on a variety of tools and use of various communication methods.

After organising a series of workshops with potential users I worked up various rough wireframes and reviewed potential functions and features to accommodate the various scenarios that the proposed application would have to deal with. Several rounds of iteration drove the design in the direction of a case management type application, with functionality for secure communication with alerts and notification for internal users within an organisation.

Once I had established the paradigm for the main function of the application and put a hierarchy on the features with a proposed navigation I was able to test the proposed flows and refine the design from the feedback.

I built the proposed UI from the reviewed and tested low fidelity wireframes and created a prototype before refining the final MVP design prior to the development phase.

I worked with a development team to create an Angular frontend library for the various components needed for the application UI and worked with the backend guys to develop the 'under-the-hood' architecture and logic.

The first version of the product, the MVP, was launched to a beta group of clients just under six months from the initial ideation stage.

Application

Under OECD guidelines finance regulators are mandated to implement an exchange of information around tax transparency for organisations and individuals. The international standard requires an exchange of information on request for relevant information for carrying out tax conventions and enforcing domestic tax laws.

The application was designed to facilitate the secure transmission of information between tax authorities utilising a case management approach.
